An anonymous Twitter user has obtained around 100,000 API keys belonging to users of the crypto trading service 3Commas. The leaker published over 10,000 of the keys on Wednesday and says the rest “will be published full [sic] randomly in the upcoming days.”

3Commas CEO Yuriy Sorokin confirmed the authenticity of the leak in a tweet on Wednesday, adding that "as an immediate action, we have asked that Binance, Kucoin, and other supported exchanges revoke all the [API] keys that were connected to 3Commas."

 Metaverse & Gaming

KEY POINTS

Sales of virtual reality headsets in the U.S. declined 2% year over year to $1.1 billion as of early December, according to NPD Group.

Worldwide shipments of VR headsets as well as augmented reality devices dropped more than 12% to 9.6 million in 2022.

Apple’s potential entry into the VR market is one of the big developments to look for in 2023.

 Blockchain, Tokens & DeFi

Debate has accelerated in recent days over the future prospects of Solana, a layer 1 smart-contract blockchain that in some respects competes with Ethereum. The chain grew rapidly and saw immense hype during the 2020-2021 bull market, particularly from venture capitalists. But the recent departure of major projects to other chains and a massive drop in total value on the Solana chain have raised questions about its future prospects.

Crypto Trading

KEY POINTS

Crypto exchange Kraken said Wednesday that it will stop operations in Japan next month, blaming a “weak crypto market globally.”

The company will deregister from Japan’s Financial Services Agency on Jan. 31, 2023.

Kraken has been in cost-cutting mode lately. On Nov. 30, the firm slashed 1,100 jobs, or 30% of its workforce.

Industry Retro (How far we have come)

Sometimes it seems like not a week goes by without news of some bitcoin service getting hacked and losing everything.

Thankfully, such attacks are rarer than that. But given the size of the bitcoin economy, they are still far, far more common than they have any right to be. A look at the history of bitcoin hacks is a look at the history of bitcoin itself, from its beginnings all the way to the genesis of the professionalised second generation of firms we’re seeing now.
